Wissam Ben Yedder profile: Sevilla striker from Sarcelles, the most dangerous area of Paris, who grew up with Riyad Mahrez and learned futsal after top clubs rejected him

Wissam Ben Yedder's two goals knocked Manchester United out of the Champions League

WISSAM Ben Yedder has earned his moment in the spotlight after his two goals in four hectic minutes dumped Manchester United out the Champions League.

The 27-year-old Sevilla striker came up the hard way, playing on the streets in the most dangerous area of Paris.

His best friend was another immigrant son who would go on to became a big name, Leicesters star man Riyad Mahrez.

The son of Tunisian immigrants, the good news for England is that he has picked France ahead of Tunisia.

Five times the Tunisians have asked him to represent them, and five times he has said no, the last coming in October 2017.

Since then, Tunisia have qualified for the World Cup in Russia, and face England in a Group G match on June 18 in Volgograd.

Why he turned down Tunisia...

Tunisia asked Wissam Ben Yedder if he wanted to play for them in the World Cup, but he wants to play for FranceCredit: AFP

Lucky for the Three Lions, Ben Yedder has always had his eye on playing for Les Bleus.

It's why when Tunisia came calling, he snubbed their advances and prays for a French call-up.

I have a lot of respect for Tunisia, but France is something else, it's the team I want to play for, he told El Pais.

At the moment the manager (Didier Deschamps) chooses others, but of course it's a dream to play the World Cup with France.

If I keep scoring goals in Sevilla and in competitions like the Champions League it could be fulfilled.

Life was rough growing up for an immigrant's son...

Being born in Sarcelles was the making of the man and it gave Ben Yedder the drive to succeed.

Not many make it out alive, away from the gangs and crime that surrounded his upbringing, but he was determined.

I had a pretty difficult childhood, Ben Yedder told Uefa.com.

Not many people succeed, there are lots of talented young players and lots of players with huge potential and so its hard to come looking for players there.

Its really tough because there are lots of players who, unfortunately, just lack a bit of success.

Before he became pro, he played futsal...

Before he turned professional, Ben Yedder honed his talents and technique in the unforgiving futsal world.

He played for Garges Djibson in the Championnat de France de Futsal Division One, as well as the French national team and under-21s.

Fifth-tier team UJA Maccabi Paris Metropole saw his potential and took a punt on him and he soon moved to Toulouse after that.

"In futsal, I picked up specific technical skills," Ben Yedder said in an interview with Bleacher Report.

"It also really improved my reaction time. In terms of footing and balance, too, futsal teaches you a lot. And most importantly, you learn to be very clinical in front of goal.

"These skills are what really helped me when I first started out in professional football.

Whether it is in duels with defenders or against keepers, I use a lot of what I learnt and perfected playing futsal all those years ago."

He has a special kinship with Leicester's Mahrez that's born out of the ghetto...

Ben Yedder and The Foxes playmaker knocked about on the same estate, playing a brand of street football to pass the days by.

But the forward looks back on those times fondly, as well how they've both gone on to succeed since.

Its great to look back at when we used to play in the neighbourhood, seeing mum shouting and also how we grew up playing in football tournaments between the estates," he told Uefa.com.

"Wed go to another estate and play them. Also, seeing yourself progress bit by bit those are all happy memories."

He doesn't mind being a Twitter troll...

The scourge of United has taken potshots at Arsenal, Man U, even A.C. Milan on social.

He's certainly not afraid to say what he feels, while rubbing salt onto the wounds of suffering footy fans.

When Sevilla fought back from three goals down to earn a 3-3 draw against Liverpool earlier this season he tweeted, 'hope @acmilan watched it' referencing the 2005 Champions League final.

After beating Man United, Wissam Ben Yedder trolled the Red DevilsCredit: Twitter @WissBenYedder

After beating United last night, Ben Yedder was quick to share a tweet a fan had predicted that he would have a hand in knocking Jose Mourinho's side out of the tournament.

He captioned the tweet: 'He knew even before me.'

Arsenal's Emirates Cup also came under fire, with Ben Yedder taking offense to the rules that meant the Gunners won the trophy even though Sevilla won both their games.

He jokingly tweeted in 2017, 'We win 2/2 but we are not first.Give us back the cup Arsenal ahaha.'

Then, when one fan decided to have a pop at him, Ben Yedder got even funnier.

He wrote: 'Ahaha. Don't be mad bro. You may get your revenge in Champions Le...... Oh wait.' Of course, Arsenal aren't in the Champions League this year.

Look away West Ham fans because he could've been leading your forward line...

The Hammers passed up the opportunity to sign Ben Yedder for just 8m in 2016 for one, very simple reason.

They thought he was too small (he's 5'6") and he wouldn't be strong enough for the rigors of English football.

Given that he's scored doubles against Liverpool and Man United this season, that couldn't be further from the truth.

It might've stopped Hammers' fans from rioting too.

Liverpool have their sights set on lifting the Champions League trophy

WITH the 2017-18 Premier League season finished, the places in European competition next season are still very much up for grabs.

Two English teams remain in European competition and winning the Champions League or Europa League would give them automatic qualification.

Liverpool travel to Roma next week in the Champions League semi-final second leg with a 5-2 lead as they look to make it to their first final in over 10 years.

Arsenal are also still in with a chance of silverware before the end of the season as they face Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals.

UEFA have changed the rules for European qualification next season so would silverware for one or both of the two remaining teams, mean that Chelsea could still qualify for the Champions League?

Bare with us... it is a little bit confusing!

How can teams qualify for the Champions League?

THERE will be 26 teams who automatically qualify for the group stages of the Champions League.

For the 2018-19 season these will be:

  • Champions league winner from 2017-18
  • Europa League winner from 2017-18
  • Top four sides from associations ranked 1st to 4th by UEFA (Spain, Germany, England, Italy)
  • Top twosides from associations ranked 5th to 6th by EUFA (France, Russia)
  • Champions of associations ranked 7th to 10th by UEFA (Portugal, Ukraine, Belgium, Turkey)

IF the team which wins the Champions League in the 2017-18 season also qualifies via their domestic league, then their place will be given to the champions of the association ranked 11th by UEFA - Czech Republic.

Similarly if the winners of the Europa League also qualify then the position will be filled by a third team from France.

There are six places available in the Champions League group stages through qualification.

Initially there will be a preliminary round which will see the four champions of the associations ranked 52-55 (Gibraltar, Andorra, San Marino, Kosovo) fight it out for a place in the first qualifying round.

Liverpool, Manchester United, Man City and Tottenham will represent England and they have all qualified automatically.

There are four rounds of qualifying which will go like:

  • FIRST qualifying (34 teams):33 champions from associations 18-51 + winner from preliminary round
  • SECOND qualifying:
-Champions path (20 teams):17 winners from first round + 3 champions from associations 10-15
-League path (six teams):six runners-up from associations 10-15
  • THIRD qualifying:
-Champions path (12 teams):10 winners from second qualifying round (champions path) + two champions from associations 13-14
-League path (eight teams):three winners from second qualifying round (league path) + three runners-up from associations 7-9 + two third place teams from associations 5-6
  • PLAY-OFF round:
-Champions path (eight teams):six winners from third qualifying round + two champions from associations 11-12
-League path (four teams):four winners from third qualifying round

Who will be in the Europa League next season?

THERE will be 17 teams who automatically qualify for the group stages of the Europa League.

For the 2018-19 season these will be:

  • Twoteams from associations ranked 1st to 5th by UEFA (Spain, Germany, England, Italy, France
  • Oneteam from associations ranked 6th to 12th by UEFA (Russia, Portgual, Ukraine, Belgium, Turkey, Czech Republic, Switzerland)
  • Tenteams will also enter the group stage from the Champions League play off rounds (4 losers from champions path and six from league path).

In England, the two places go to the team who finishfifthin the Premier League and the winners of the FA Cup will book their place in the Europa League for the next season.

If the FA Cup winners have already qualified for either European competition through their Premier League position, then the team insixthwill qualify for the group stages.

And if the Carabao Cup winners have also qualified for Europe, the team in seventh will make it.

England will be represented by Arsenal, Chelsea and Burnley in the Europa League next season.

Arsenal and Chelsea will begin their campaign in the group stage.

Burnley will start in the second qualifying round, meaning they will have to play three knockout ties to reach the groups.

There are a further 21 teams which can make it through the qualifying rounds of the Europa League.

Initially there is a preliminary round which sees 16 teams battle it out for a place in the first qualifying round.

There are four rounds of qualifying which will be as follows:

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says no club will want to play us in last 16 of Champions League

Jurgen Klopp was absolutely delighted after seeing his Liverpool side thump Spartak Moscow

LIVERPOOL manager Jurgen Klopp says that none of the other Champions League teams will want to face his team after the 7-0 thrashing handed out to Spartak Moscow.

That resulttook their tally for their European campaign 23, the second-highest in the competition's group stage history behind Paris St-Germain's 25 this year.

The Reds have scored 32 goals in an unbeaten nine-match run since losing to Tottenham in late October and are hitting top form at precisely the time they began to run out of gas 12 months ago.

That should hopefully bode well for when the Champions League restarts in February.

Asked if his side would be a threat in the last 16, Klopp said: "If we perform like this tonight, if we are that clinical, then yes.

"But we had the same players already and they didn't score (in some previous games).

"If we perform like this then it is obviously a threat, 100 per cent. If you see how Dom Solanke performed in Stoke, how Daniel Sturridge performed when he came on, he could have scored two or three, he made a goal for Sadio, that's good."

Philippe Coutinho led the way with his first Liverpool hat-trick with Sadio Mane scoring twice, with Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah getting the others.

RED ROAR Liverpool thump Spartak Moscow to top the group

It meant Liverpool topped Group E and avoided the likes of PSG, Barcelona and Roma but could still draw Bayern Munich, Juventus or Real Madrid.

"We knew if we won we would top the group so that's not the biggest surprise but I think it's strange this year in the group stages," Klopp added.

"There are a lot of really strong teams. This year is quite special. Not often you can face Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, but Juventus and all the others.

"Antonio Conte (Chelsea manager) said it yesterday there are no easy opponents and I don't think anyone is happy when they get us in the draw.

"We will not be happy when we see who we face in the next round, but we will be ready."

Spartak boss Massimo Carrera struggled to defend his side's performance.

"I can't explain this. Liverpool were better in everything: in quality, in anger, in passion. It seems like we're not yet ready for such big games," he said.

"We had enough chances to return into the game after conceding the first goal but we couldn't."

AN Anfield ball boy has been hailed as the real hero behind Liverpools incredible European comeback.

He took a corner extremely quickly to catch out Barcas sleeping defenders, allowing Divock Origi to score unchallenged.

However, it has now emerged that Alexander-Arnold was only able to take that quick corner thanks to the lightning reactions of a nearby ball boy.

As the original football went out of play for a Liverpool corner, the ball boy immediately threw a new one at Alexander-Arnold as he lined up at the flag.

Realising nobody had clocked the new ball, Alexander-Arnold fired it low into the box and Origi spun around in the nick of time to fire the ball past Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Ball boy runs on pitch and gives Lionel Messi two finger salute at final whistle following Liverpool's dramatic win over Barcelona

The goal meant Liverpool went 4-0 up on the night, making it 4-3 on aggregate after losing 3-0 in the first leg at the Nou Camp.

Jurgen Klopps men will now face either Spurs or Ajax in the final on June 1 at Atletico Madrids Wanda Metropolitano.

Fans were quick to sing the ball boys praises, with one saying: Ran on the pitch at full time and gave the finger to Messi too. What a lad.

Another wrote: He deserves a free season ticket from Liverpool.

LEGEND

One tweeted: Ticket to the final then.

Another added: The kid is a legend, love it.

Reflecting on his assist, Alexander-Arnold told BT Sport: It was just instinctive.

It was one of those moments where you see the opportunity.

Divock was switched on and finished it off. It probably came at him a bit fast but he is a top player.

He scored two goals for us tonight and everyone will remember this moment.

Origi added: We did so well. We knew it was going to be a special night.

We wanted to fight for the injured guys. It is hard to describe, it is just special.

We fought so hard until the end. It shows our mix of talent and hard work.

His excitement about the big match on Saturday is tinged with sadness because he wont be able to enjoy it with his old pal.

Huge Spurs fan Dave isnt travelling to Madrid for the all-English showdown with Liverpool.

He will watch it with 62,000 fans at a sell-out screening at the clubs new 1billion stadium - which he would have done with Chas.

Dave said: Im choked hes not here to witness the Champions League final. I wish he was.

Im going up the ground, it will be amazing, I would have watched it with him.

I think about him all the time, not just about football.

Dave added: But he would be thinking the same as all of us. Hoping we can keep Liverpool at bay.

But we can be good on our day if we rise to the occasion.

We have to sharpen up and if we do and win it it will be beyond our wildest dreams.

Ossies Dream was all done and dusted in five minutes.

Dave

The 80s comedy music legends hits in their heyday included Spurs favourites Ossies Dream and Glory, Glory Tottenham Hotspur.

Dave said in February he couldnt face recording again because he was still too distraught after Chas death - but that could now change.

He added: People keep going on about a song. Never say never. Well have to wait and see.

He said Ossies Dream - about former Spurs and Argentina star Ossie Ardiles - took just minutes to write.

The 1981 FA Cup song mocked his pronunciation of the clubs name which he called Tott-ing-ham.

Dave recalled: I heard Ossie on the radio saying Tott-ing-ham and I thought is a bit of a hook.

The manager was Keith Burkinshaw and I thought Id make them all soldiers marching off to Wembley.

Ossies Dream was all done and dusted in five minutes.

Praising Tottenham for reaching what was the old European Cup final for the first time in their 137-year history, he said: It says a lot about Mauricio Pochettino.

The chairman Daniel Levy hasnt bought anyone all season.

But weve got to the final which is an amazing achievement I think.

Chas, also 74, died from pneumonia last September.
He had also been suffering from oesophageal cancer.

Mane, Salah and Firmino strike while Van Dijk heads in fourth as Liverpool set up Champions League semi-final tie with Barcelona

Liverpool booked their spot in the semi-finals after cruising past Porto

LIVERPOOL cruised to a date night with Lionel Messi and a reunion with Philippe Coutinho.

The moment VAR ruled Sadio Manes first-half effort was onside, this quarter-final was over as a contest and Jurgen Klopp would not have wanted it any other way.

Ultimately, the Reds demolished their opponents in yet another remarkable win at this level of European football.

On a thoroughly cold and miserable night, Liverpools fans secured a trip to what should be a far sunnier Barcelona in a few weeks and a not-so-friendly reunion with former playmaker Coutinho.
After watching this, Barca have every reason to be worried.

In what had real potential to be a tricky evening, particularly after the way Roma were turned over at the Estadio do Dragao in the previous round, Klopps team delivered a thoroughly professional performance to ensure there were no worries.

After surviving an early onslaught, Liverpool took the lead with the help of VAR and Mane.

Mo Salah grabbed the second midway inside the second half before Eder Militao pulled a goal back.

But Liverpool then humiliated the Portuguese side with further goals from Roberto Firmino and Virgil van Dijk.

Having wasted 13 chances in the first 26 minutes, and then seeing Dutch referee Danny Makkelie end a two-minute VAR wait by pointing to the centre-circle, Porto knew they were about to be dumped out of the Champions League for the second time in succession by Liverpool.

While 14 months ago Liverpool stormed to a strange 5-0 win here, this time it was all much more low key.

Sadio Mane scored the first to settle Liverpool's nerves in the second legCredit: Getty - Contributor

After holding firm early on, Mane scored his 22nd goal of the season in his teams first attack.

While Salah has come to life over these last few weeks in spectacular fashion, it is Mane who has been Liverpools most consistent attacker this season.

So a fascinating semi-final with Messi n Co now awaits, although the focus will certainly still be on Sundays tricky Premier League trip to Cardiff.

But Klopp will be happy this was not an energy-sapping, backs-to-the-wall 90 minutes. Like they have done all season, apart from that blip at the start of the year, Liverpool used different tools to find a way to win.

That is why they have such great momentum. There is no doubt they are no longer Euro novices.

This was a really good test and another important experience for Klopps team, particularly the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, a young player who has found it tough on some of the previous big European evenings.

Last night, though, in front of England boss Gareth Southgate, he delivered an impressive display.

Any Liverpool fans expecting some nice, warm Portuguese weather would have got a shock as the temperatures were not only cooler than England yesterday but it was incredibly wet.

And a torrential downpour shortly before kick-off made conditions tricky. With Jordan Henderson carrying a knock, it was no major surprise he started on the bench, although Divock Origi getting the nod ahead of Firmino up front was a major turn-up for the books.

Do away goals count in the Champions League, and is the rule used if ties go to extra time?

It was the Belgians first Champions League start for the club he had not managed more than 17 minutes in any of his four previous appearances in Europe.

He started out on the left, with Mane playing centrally, but at half-time was replaced by Firmino.

The focus at the start was always going to be on Liverpools back four and their ability to stand firm under an early barrage from the home side.

The first quarter followed a similar pattern. Porto had the ball, wasted a chance and Liverpool booted it back into their half and repeat.

Then, however, Mane scored. Talk about a goal against the run of play. It was the visitors first attack of the game and completely and utterly stunned the home crowd not to mention the Porto team.

Mane and Andy Robertson played a one-two, Salah scuffed a shot, Gini Wijnaldum returned the ball and Liverpools Egyptian maestro had another effort.

While he looked to be aiming for the corner it was going wide until Mane charged in at the far post.

The linesmans flag was raised immediately and it looked a tight decision.

Mane did not protest too much but Salah stuck his thumbs up, as if to insist that the outcome would be positive.

And after a two-minute wait, referee Makkelie pointed to the centre spot and Mane was able to celebrate.

James Milner came close to a goal via a deflection in first half injury-time.

While Porto huffed and puffed, they never really came close to hurting Liverpool before Salah scored the second midway through the second half after being sent clear by Alexander-Arnold.

For Liverpools right-back that was the end of his evening as he was replaced by the fit-again Joe Gomez.

Porto defender Militao, who will be heading to Real Madrid for 45million in the summer, then scored with a powerful header from a corner.

Mane missed a good chance before Firmino headed Hendersons cross into the net for 3-1.

Van Dijk grabbed the fourth as it all became a bit embarrassing for the Portuguese champions.

In reality, Champions League quarter-finals do not come any easier than this.

Any Barca fans already booking their accomodation for the final in Madrid should hold fire.

Incredible footage emerges of Cristiano Ronaldo's rousing team talk that inspired Real Madrid to beat Liverpool in Champions League final

Jurgen Klopp's side are scheduled to play in Italy on October 3, the second matchday of this season's tournament as they look to go one step further than last year.

Aurelio De Laurentiis has publicly criticised the home of Napoli, Stadio San Paolo which is municipally-owned.

And he is prepared to pay for 1,000 coaches to take fans to each match from Naples on Italy's west coast to Bari on the east coast.

It takes more than three hours to drive between the two stadia.

In an interview with Corriere dello Sport, De Laurentiis said: "The stadium of Napoli is a nightmare. Such a bad stadium limits Napoli at an international level.

"It will take two years but I am going to build a new stadium so nobody can say anything to me."

The comments angered Naples mayor Luigi Di Magistris, who is in an ongoing dispute with the Napoli president.

Di Magistris said: "His suggestion is unthinkable and impractical. Its a serious matter to even think about something like that.

LIONEL MESSI squared up to angry Barcelona fans at Liverpool airport after being abused over his side's humiliating Champions League exit last night, according to reports in Spain.

Mundo Deportivo report that the Barca star got into the altercation just hours after crashing out of the tournament.

The incident is said to have happened at around midnight.

Messi missed the Barcelona team coach after the 4-0 defeat, as the skipper was tested by anti-doping officials at Anfield.

He arrived separately from the rest of the squad, with his personal security guard and manager Pepe Costa.

At the security checkpoint a small group of fans are said to have confronted Messi.

The report states that Messi "faced them" before being dragged away by Costa, to avoid a more serious situation.

Another set of fans close by are said to have applauded Messi as he passed through security.

'BARCELONA BLOODBATH'

Barcelona suffered one of the worst defeats in their history as they blew a 3-0 first-leg lead and saw Jurgen Klopp's side storm into the final.

The Spanish press dubbed the defeat the "biggest embarrassment in history", with Marca describing the loss as an "historic failure" and AS labelling it a "bloodbath".

After the stunning defeat, Barcelona wasted little time in making their departure from Anfield.

But they left Messi behind, after he had been summoned by Uefa officials to provide a urine sample.

Messi cut a lonely figure as he trudged past the mixed zone, with all his team-mates waiting at Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner had little influence on the game, as Jurgen Klopp set up the perfect game-plan for his team to dominate from start to finish.

Messi's strike partner Luis Suarez slammed his team's defending.

The former Liverpool hero said: "For their fourth goal we looked like schoolboys, we have to be ready for all the criticism that is going to rain down on us now.

"We are very sad, we are in a lot of pain, we feel this pain even though we are professionals.

"We have to do a lot of self criticism because this is the second time that the same thing has happened to us.

"We cannot commit the same mistake two years in a row, there are many things we need to consider and think about.

"They (Liverpool) did what they wanted to do, which was to score early. They believed from the first minute to the last.

"I do not know if it's a matter of attitude, but we're in Barcelona, we can not get two goals in a row. The fourth is a goal by kids."

Jurgen Klopp reveals the only difference between him and Pep Guardiola his teams arent as good

Jurgen Klopp has won six of 12 meetings with Pep Guardiola with one draw

LIVERPOOL boss Jurgen Klopp thinks there is only one difference between himself and Pep Guardiola - his teams are not as good.

The German has more wins over the Manchester City tactician than any other manager, with six in 12 games.

And after being asked about Guardiola's lauded style, he insisted there was little to pick between them.

Former Mainz and Borussia Dortmund boss Klopp told Uefa:"There's no big difference, actually. It's just that Pep's teams Pep has always had better teams than me.

"You can see that now with Manchester City - they have a lot more points than we do. However, that difference has never been as small as it is now. When we coached at Bayern and Dortmund respectively, that difference was really big.

"And when he was coaching Barcelona, I was at Mainz, so that was a completely different situation. They've got a lot more ball possession than I ever had in my coaching career.

"They were always world-class teams and we always had to improve a little bit. That's about the only major difference. When you have more ball possession, you don't need to worry too much about what you need to do when your opponents have the ball.

"That's basically everything. But, apart from that, the difference is not so incredibly large. However, there are always some [differences] at the end of the day."

RED HOT Jurgen Klopp ready for a fire in Liverpools Champions League quarter-final scorcher against Manchester City

Asked to describe Guardiola's free-flowing style, Klopp added: "His teams are always excellently positioned. He always has great teams which make excellent decisions.

"At Barcelona it was Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets, Lionel Messi and so on, just to mention the creative players from his time there.

"At Bayern Munich he had fantastic players who made a lot of great decisions. Now, with Gundogan, Silva, Aguero, Sane on the left wing, Sterling on the wing, Gabriel Jesus, they're extraordinary.

"Positioning is important, but this is not witchcraft, it is not unusual just because the wing-backs come inside, but when the players are in position they move every millisecond in order to be available, and when they are, that's when the individual quality of the player becomes important, and they control the ball correctly.

"So they're already well positioned on the pitch, they know what's going on around them, they are very well orientated and they can pass the ball into the next area.

"That's what makes them extraordinary. And whenever they can't pass they use their pace in order to progress further up.

"And then the space on the wing is free. When you have one good player in the middle, or three or four good players, you need to know how to defend well.

"Then, boom, you move the ball to the wings and an incredibly fast player runs towards the goalline and crosses the ball into the penalty area. That's a real challenge, for sure.

"It's actually a mix of Pep's skills regarding these aspects and, of course, the extraordinary skills of his players."

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes brands Jose Mourinho an embarrassment and lucky to have a job in amazing rant

Paul Scholes tore into Jose Mourinho in an amazing rant ahead of Valencia clash

PAUL SCHOLES has branded Jose Mourinho an "embarrassment" - and is amazed Manchester United have not sacked him.

Mourinho is at loggerheads with Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez, and questioned his players' commitment after Saturday's dismal 3-1 defeat at West Ham.

It is United's worst start to a season for 29 years and Mourinho has come under fire.

Old Trafford legend Scholes, speaking before United's goalless Champions League draw against Valencia, said: "I'm surprised he survived after Saturday, the performance was so bad.

"He's coming out in press conferences and constantly having a go at players, having a go at people above him because he's not getting what he wants.

"I think his mouth is out of control and he's embarrassing the club."

Fellow United great Rio Ferdinand believes Mourinho, 55, WANTS to be sacked.

Speaking as a BT Sport pundit, he said: "It was obvious to anyone watching on Saturday the attitude was wrong and he said the attitude wasn't the problem. Then he's picking on the scouts. It's like he wants to get the sack."

Under-fire Mourinho took aim at Pogba for not caring about the name on his shirt more than his team - and told players not to lose "dignity" in his programme notes tonight.

But Scholes insists Mourinho must take the flak for United's poor form.

He said: "Of course players have to take responsibility but ultimately it has to come from the manager.

"Hes the one sending them out to perform. Youre not always going to play well but the first thing you expect is attitude and effort and theyve got neither.

"He's been there two years and he doesn't have a clue what his best team is. There is no identity and no way of playing any more.

"Its plainly obvious to me that there are players in that dressing room who want the manager to go."

Nemanja Matic, who also played for Mourinho at Chelsea, insists the players are on his side.

The Serb said: "We all have the same target.

"We all play for the same club and are together every day.

"We will try to resolve our problems inside our dressing room and to show that on the pitch because the result is the most important thing in football."

Manchester United have been handed the hardest possible draw in stopping Lionel Messi and Co.

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER will hope to perform a Champions League miracle that would make Sir Alex Ferguson proud by stopping Lionel Messi.

The last time Manchester United faced the five-time Ballon d'Or winner in Europe's elite competiton was the 2011 final, when the Argentinian wreaked havoc as Barcelona ran out 3-1 winners.

Manchester United have been handed the hardest possible draw in stopping Lionel Messi and Co.

But as is the case with their stunning comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16, the Red Devils can relax going into the tie where they are seen as underdogs.

Solskjaer's side are facing their toughest test to date but they can also take comfort from the fact that the La Liga giants have failed to win in four trips to Old Trafford.

TEAM NEWS

Manchester United can welcome back Paul Pogba after the French midfielder served his one-match ban during the 3-1 away win in Paris.

Marcus Rashford and Ander Herrera were both forced to sit out United's recent defeat to Wolves with minor injuries but are expected to return.

Solskjaer will be missing Matteo Darmian, Eric Bailly, Antonio Valencia and Alexis Sanchez, while Herrera, Ashley Young, Luke Shaw, and Nemanja Matic are one booking away from missing the return leg.

Ousmane Dembele has been named in the Barcelona squad despite not being medically cleared to play, while Rafinha remains ruled out for the rest of the season.

LIKELY LINE-UPS

Man Utd: De Gea, Young, Smalling, Lindelof, Shaw, McTominay, Herrera, Pogba, Rashford, Lingard, Martial

Barcelona: ter Stegen; Semedo, Pique, Lenglet, Alba; Busquets, Rakitic, Arthur; Messi, Suarez, Coutinho

DANGER MAN

Messi remains the obvious danger man for Barcelona and it really doesn't help that the 31-year-old has scored 13 goals and set up another four in his last ten games.

The Spanish side also have ex-Liverpool stars Suarez and Coutinho who have experience of playing against United, with the latter scoring at Old Trafford in the Europa League in 2016.

However, Solskjaer is likely to restore Jesse Lingard as a false nine which was used to great effect for the first time in the win against Spurs at Wembley in January.

The England international's dribbling is able to draw out defenders, which gives Rashford and Martial space to use their pace to run in behind.

WEAK LINK

One-time United target Nelson Semedo is finally making his way to Old Trafford but the right-back will have a tough ask to try and nullify Rashford out-wide.

The former Benfica defender is also one match away from a ban in the competition and will likely be targeted by Solskjaer's side.

While the Red Devils are a terrific counter-attacking side, their under-fire defence will have to hold firm against the likes of Messi and Suarez for most of the game.

Young will have to keep his composure after seeing red for a reckless challenge at Wolves while Smalling's poor positioning led to him turning into his own net.

Neil Ashton: Jose Mourinho and Cristiano Ronaldo will put their differences aside to share a handshake but one will lose face at Old Trafford

Jose Mourinho will go head-to-head with former player Cristiano Ronaldo at Old Trafford on Tuesday

THE Special One and Cristiano Ronaldo, best of enemies when this ego-mad pair fell out with spectacular consequences at Real Madrid, will share a handshake at Old Trafford.

It has to be that way because Ronnie is revered by the Manchester United fans who watched him score 15 times for them in the Champions League.

Mourinho, no matter how much it sticks in his craw, must respect that.

Ronaldo will get a reception fit for a king when he walks out in the colours of Juventus tonight.

He has been back before, scoring the 69th minute winner at OT when Mourinho was his manager at Real Madrid on his last visit in 2013.

By then their relationship had deteriorated, with Ronnie and Mourinho at war over the way the Galacticos were set up to play.

The Special One, arch-pragmatist and the classic counter-punching coach, wanted Real Madrid to sacrifice some of their famous attacking principles.

Ronnie, dominating the dressing room and recruiting influential defender Sergio Ramos to be on his side, resisted.

He had just become world player of the year for the second time, ruling the roost at the Bernabeu just as Mourinho was starting to lose support inside the changing room.

There is a memorable picture of Mourinhos final game in charge, with a conciliatory gesture from Ronaldo to come towards him when his manager stood sulking in the tunnel.

Later, in an interview with Esquire magazine, the former Real coach claimed Ronnie spent too much time looking in the mirror in the tunnel before matches.

Heres looking at you, kid.

Ronaldo is a phenomenon, with his career straddling three of the most powerful clubs in the history of the sport.

He scored at the weekend, putting his off-field troubles to one side with his trademark celebration after putting Juve ahead in their 1-1 draw with Genoa.

He is up and running with five goals in Italy, operating with the full support of his club after those disturbing allegations of rape surfaced fully at the start of the month.

Kathryn Mayorga claims Ronaldo sexually assaulted her in a Las Vegas Hotel in 2009 and has already revealed that she was paid $375,000 by Ronaldo to keep details of her allegations hushed-up.

He disputes her version of events, publishing an emphatic denial on social media after Der Speigel uncovered details of the payment, on condition that Mayorga signed a non-disclosure agreement, in their investigation.

Excused from international duty with Portugal for the rest of the year while he continues the fight to clear his name in public, he has played on for Juve.

After a spluttering start, with doubts quickly surfacing about the wisdom of signing him from the European champions in the summer, his career in Italy is underway.

Jose Mourinho chases one of the Chelsea staff and has to be held back after blues snatch injury time equaliser against Manchester United

He has overcome his dismissal against Valencia on his Champions League debut for Juve to follow up on his double against Sassuolo with goals against Frosinone, Udinese and Genoa.

Even at 33 his appetite for the sport is undimmed.

He is a United legend, convincing the dressing room that he would become a global superstar when he returned ripped from the World Cup in 2006

For a time he was booed at away grounds, christened The Portuguese Winker after United team-mate Wayne Rooney was sent off for stamping on Ricardo Carvalho in the quarter-final in Gelsenkirchen.

Gary Neville has written extensively on Ronaldos attitude, his remarkable commitment and dedication to become the best player in world football.

He got there, with his talents recognised by Fifa in 2008 when he scored 42 goals for United in the year they beat Chelsea to the Champions League in the final in Moscow.

A year later, when he was finally granted his wish to join Real Madrid in 2009, Ronnies goals had taken United to yet another Premier League title.

They have never had a player like him since, nothing to compare with his remarkable talents and his ability to win games single-handedly.

Mourinho wants it done a different way, all about the process as he tries desperately to convince his dressing room that he can still build something big at United.

In the short term it means keeping Ronaldo quiet, locking him up in a Champions League group game that United cannot afford to lose.

Whatever the outcome, one of them will lose face.

Solskjaer admits Man Utd need a huge rebuilding job to reach level of Barcelona

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer watched United outclassed by Barcelona

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER admitted he has a huge rebuilding job on his hands after Manchester United were humbled in Barcelona.

The Red Devils were thumped 3-0 to go out at the quarter-final stage of the Champions League 4-0 on aggregate.

And gutted Solskjaer said: We know there's work to be done, I've said all along this isn't going to change overnight and the next few years are going be massive to get to the level of Barcelona and other teams are at.

Wehave spoken to the players we need to get the best out of each other and create an environment of top, top class attitude world class attitude every single day.

We've got good players to work with and at the moment we've done really well to get to the quarters and challenge for top four but as I said we've got a rebuilding job but it starts with the coaches and players, and with one or two additions.

That is the Barcelona team here, that's the level we have to aspire to. We can get there but we have loads of work to do.

If we want to get back to United's true traditions and level, we know we have to challenge the Barcelona's. I have to say they were a couple of levels above today and at Old Trafford."

United were undone in the space of four first half minutes as Lionel Messi scored in the 16thand 20thminutes. Philippe Coutinho curled in a stunner to round the scoring off in the 61st minute.

Solskjaer said: The quality of their finishing was absolutely outstanding.

We started well. In the first 15 mins we felt we've got something here and then in four mins they scored two goals.

Messihes top quality. He was the difference. He and Cristiano Ronaldo are different class and have been best players for last decade. He showed his quality.

The 4-0 aggregate defeat was Uniteds worst in the knockout stages of European competition.

David De Gea blundered for Barcas second goal - allowing Messis shot to squirm under his body but Solskjaer defended his No1.

Solskjaer said: That's unfortunate with goalkeepers when you make an error it can get highlighted and that'll be remembered.

"But he made some fantastic saves and his contribution to the team is good but sometimes that happens in football.

Sergio Aguero scores identical goal to famous QPR strike and Man City fans love it

Sergio Aguero repeated his heroics against QPR as he smashed past Hugo Lloris tonight

SERGIO AGUERO scored the most dramatic goal in Manchester City's history when he smashed in against QPR to win the league in 2012 - and he has done it again.

The striker bagged what was an almost identical goal seven years on which could put his side into the Champions League semi-finals.

Sergio Aguero repeated his heroics against QPR as he smashed past Hugo Lloris tonight

Against QPR, it was Mario Balotelli who poked through for the Argentine to smash home at the Etihad.

This time it was Kevin De Bruyne who provided his third assist of a frantic night to put Manchester City ahead in their tie with Tottenham for the first time.

City knew they had to overturn the 1-0 deficit from North London eight days ago and started in emphatic fashion with Raheem Sterling curling home after four minutes.

But three minutes later Son Heung-min equalised on the night and then found the top corner with ten minutes on the clock to turn the game on its head.

Bernardo Silva and Sterling put City back ahead on the night but still behind on away goals before Aguero struck just before the hour mark.

Carbon copy finish of the QPR title goal from Aguero. Lloris very much Alex McCarthy.

And Twitter fans were loving it.

One said: "Man citys 4th goal scored by Kun Aguero takes us back to 2012 when he scored in exactly the same way against QPR and winning premier league because of it."

Another very excited user added: "I CANT BELIEVE WHAT IM SEEING. THIS HIGH SCORING OF A UCL GAME. 30 MINS TO GO. CITY LEAD, thanks to DE BRUYNE classically running through the whole team and WHO ELSE but AGUERO to score the potential winning goal, the best City player ever, the one who did it similarly vs. QPR."

A third wrote: "Had similarities of the title winner vs QPR that."

And Peter Stephens tweeted: "Carbon copy finish of the QPR title goal from Aguero. Lloris very much Alex McCarthy."

Another said: "How similar was Aguero's goal there to that iconic one he scored to win City the league against QPR, brilliant!"

But even with his emphatic finish, Aguero would not have the final say - Fernando Llorente bundled in off his thigh to put Spurs back in front on away goals.

City needed their hero to step up in injury time once again and although they thought he had done it, VAR ruled Sterling's apparent winner out for offside and it was Spurs that went through... JUST.

He eventually said: "I am not the guy to answer that," craftily avoiding having to give an answer.

The same journalist had previously asked whether Guardiola should consider a more defensive style of play, especially in big Champions League matches.

While not one to divert away from his passing philosophy, the Manchester City manager accepted adaptations are key in the approach to each match and no style can guarantee success.

He said:"Nobody has a guaranteed way of playing to win the Champions League.

Lionel Messis 600 goals for Barcelona include nearly a quarter of clubs Champions League total and one with his hand

Where to watch films The Goldfinch 2019 for free online

Incredible stats show how the Argentine superstar has reached the milestone

LIONEL MESSI has now scored 600 times for Barcelona - which includes almost a quarter of the club's Champions League goals and even one with his left HAND.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner reached the milestone with an incredible free kick during Wednesday's 3-0 win over Liverpool at the Nou Camp.

Incredible stats show how the Argentine superstar has reached the milestone

Messi scored his 600th club goal in all competitions exactly 14 years after his first strike against Albacete 1 May 2005.

It took him just 683 games to reach it - which is 116 fewer than it took Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 31-year-old possesses the power score from anywhere on the pitch - but 501 of his goals have come from inside the box.

He is Barcelona's No1 penalty taker as he has scored 70 from the spot and the remaining 99 have come from outside the area.

Messi has scored 491 goals with his left boot, but has still found the net 85 times with his so-called "weaker" right foot.

The Argentine ace stands at just 5"5', but he has scored 22 goals with his head including an unforgettable one against Manchester United.

During a Champions League clash in 2009, he jumped above Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand to put his name on the scoresheet.

But most surprisingly of all, Messi has registered a goal with his left hand.

He followed in the footsteps of his compatriot Diego Maradona as he slapped the ball into the net during a match against Espanyol in 2007.

Just to prove he could do it all, he also knocked the ball across with his chest during the Club World Cup in 2009.

Messi has scored 112 times in the Champions League - which equates to 22.3 per cent of his club's goals in the competition.

The forward has scored 417 times in La Liga, 50 times in Copa del Rey, 13 times in Spanish Supercopa, five in the World Club Cup and three times in the Super Cup.

He is miles ahead of Barcelona's next highest goalscorer, Cesar Rodriguez, who netted 232 times for the club.

But even at the age of 31, the Barca skipper is showing no signs of slowing down.

He scored a tap-in against Liverpool after Luis Suarez's opener before he made history with a strike from 25 yards.

He said: "Those games are in the past, the present is another story.

"It is totally different. This type of game is a good chance for every player to show the right value, for sure every player has to play in the right way.

"It's a draw and our reaction must be positive. As I know very well you must be ready to face everything and in this case you must ready to face Barcelona.

"But our priority must be the league and try to stay up and fight for a Champions League place.

"That must be our priority and when it will be the moment and play Barcelona then we will think about that game.

"We have to be very realistic that this league is very dangerous. We have to go game by game and play every game with 120 percent of our strength or we risk to have a bad surprise at the end of the season."

Can two English teams play each other in the Champions League quarter-final?

FOUREnglish sides have made it through to the Champions League final:

  • Tottenham
  • Manchester United
  • Manchester City
  • Liverpool
  • Ajax
  • Barcelona
  • Porto
  • Juventus

Yes. The quarter-final is the first stage in which country protection is removed.

In the group stage and second round no two teams from the same country can face each other.

But now Man United, Man City, Liverpool and Spurs could all face off against each other

This last happened as recently as 2018 when Liverpool beat Man City in an epic match.

What happens if both Manchester United and Manchester City are drawn at home?

According to UEFA: "Manchester City and Manchester United cannot play at home on the same night, nor on consecutive nights."

If drawn in the same home-away sequence, United's fixtures will be reversed as they finished lower in the Premier League last season.

Lorenzo Insigne will be hoping to fire Napoli into the knockout stages

NAPOLI still have a slim chance of reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League - but they need results elsewhere to go for them.

The Italians are still in third and three points behind Shakhtar Donestk - meaning they need Manchester City to do them and defeat the Ukrainians.

If the Prem side do win then Napoli will progress if they overcome Feyenoord in Holland due to their better head-to-head record over their rivals.

Solskjaer pays for himself as Man Utd scoop 9m with win over PSG, covering compensation fee to Molde

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has effectively paid his own compensation fee to become new Manchester United manager full-time

MANCHESTER UNITED have banked 9MILLION for reaching the Champions League quarter-finals - more than enough to make Ole Gunnar Solskjaer their permanent boss.

On a stunning night in the French capital, a late Marcus Rashford VAR penalty saw United dump out Paris Saint-Germain.

Down 2-0 from the first leg, Solskjaer's troops silenced the Parc des Princes - barring the away end, as Romelu Lukaku scored twice before Rashford's glory.

Juan Bernat had equalised for 1-1 in the game, but United's 3-1 win saw them go through on away goals.

That progression has swelled the coffers at Old Trafford - and will be more than enough to pay compensation to Molde.

As SunSport has previously reported, United have agreed a 7.2million deal to make Solskjaer their new permanent manager.

Sky Sports News claimedUnitedhad formalised a compensation package with his Norwegian club which will potentially come into force at the end of the season.

Originally, Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino was the No1 choice to replace Jose Mourinho in the long-term.

But Solskjaer has stunned since he came in to steady the ship - still undefeated in 12 Premier League games.

His only loss was the first leg reversal to PSG, but he has clearly righted that wrong and in some style too.

In the Champions League, not only do Manchester United have the chance of making history but there is up to 25m more in bonus payments up for grabs.

Each side in the quarter-finals of the competition scoops 9m, and those who make it through to the semi-finals will collect a further 10.33m.

Both teams who reach the final will be paid 12.9m, with a further 3.4m extra being dished out to the overall winners.
