Now the worlds most-expensive centre-back, 27, is faced with the task of stopping one of the greatest, if not the best ever, strikers.

And he did not try to hide the fact he and his Liverpool team-mates know they face a huge challenge in the last four.

When quizzed about it after the demolition job in Porto, Van Dijk insisted that he will need help from the whole Anfield side in order to advance to the final for the second-successive year.

He said: How are we going to do it (stop Messi)? I dont know, well see.

Its going to be a great match-up for all of us.

Its about doing it all together, its never one vs one, its never just me against a particular striker.

Its always us against everyone and I think thats the only way we can defend well.

Van Dijk is one of the leading contenders to be crowned footballer of the year.

The ex-Celtic and Southampton man has shone against everyone who has come up against him.

But he knows his greatest challenge now lies ahead in Messi.

Van Dijk added: Its going to be very hard and I think hes the best player in the world but well see.

The Argentine magician and his Barcelona colleagues welcome Van Dijk and Liverpool to the Nou Camp for the first-leg on Wednesday, May 1.

The La Liga giants then make the trip to Anfield six days later to determine who will meet either Tottenham or Ajax at Atletico Madrids Wanda Metropolitano on June 1 in the final.

Travel Republic will allow one willing customer to switch their destination to Siberia - where you can be sure that you will be away from the all celebrations and singing in Madrid.

While fans also have the option of changing their trip to either Valencia, Bilbao or Seville.

Managing Director at Travel Republic Frank Rejwan said: For the next three weeks there will be little respite from gloating Spurs and Liverpool fans at work, in the pub and every time people turn on the radio or open a paper.

Jurgen Klopp and Niko Kovac had a heated debate after the final whistle

JURGEN KLOPP let rip at Niko Kovac after the Bayern managers handshake snub.

The Liverpool boss yelled at Kovac then revealed he was not over the moon with this Champions League result.

Klopp, whose team go to Munich on March 13, said: I wanted to shake Nikos hand immediately. He went and shook all of the Bayern players hands.

When he came back I said I was waiting. But he apologised and I said no problem. It was a pure misunderstanding. I stood there like the ox in front of the mountain.

To clear up any further misunderstanding, in Germany people say that when they are baffled!

And Kovac admitted: Its common in England to shake hands after the final whistle. But first I am to my bench and not to him.

He knows that differently from England. But it was not meant to be bad, I apologised after that.

Liverpools normally-rampant attack were also left frustrated after this last-16 first-leg draw.

Klopp added: It is not the result or game we dreamed of. I am not over the moon but I am completely okay.

This is the best draw you can get but, yes, we can play better, we should play better. It was a big fight.

We had better chances in the first half and I cannot remember any chances in the second half for either side.

But it is absolutely okay. The tie is not over. We have a base for the second leg.

It is not a game you will remember in 20 years but that is the result and we will work with that.

I am sure Bayern will feel better than we do. A 0-0 is not perfect but we can work with that.

Liverpool still defended well without key man Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho impressed as a stand-in.

Klopp, now preparing for Sundays clash at Manchester United, added: It is a clean sheet without the big man and not a lot of people would have expected that.

We were playing against an outstanding side. Lets now recover and play United.

Midfielder Jordan Henderson said: It is not the worst result in the world.

We have to go there and put on a performance. We have to be confident. We know how good they are. I feel we can go and hurt them.

Left-back Andy Robertson said: The tie is well and truly alive and we have to go over there and believe.

Cristiano Ronaldo has scored in each of the eight Champions League fixtures this season

CRISTIANO RONALDO maintained his remarkable record of scoring in every Champions League match this campaign as Paris Saint-Germain crashed out to leave Unai Emery on the brink.

The Portuguese ace made it nine goals from nine European games when he headed Real Madrid in front six minutes into the second half.

Paris Saint-Germain's task of restoring the 3-1 deficit from the first-leg without Neymar was made even harder when Marco Verratti received a second yellow card for dissent.

Edinson Cavani gave them a fighting chance when a loose ball in the box ricocheted off his leg and into the net with 20 minutes left on the clock.

Any hopes of an unlikely comeback were dashed however when Casemiro's deflected effort looped over Areola to end the tie and possibly Emery's job at the French champions.

After splashing out a world record fee on Neymar and signing Kylian Mbappe last summer, Emery's minimum expectations was to take his side to the semi-finals.

With the Ligue 1 title seemingly wrapped up, the Champions League is the one trophy that the mega-rich side remain desperate to win.

They crashed out of the round of 16 one year ago and spent a fortune to ensure it wouldn't happen again.

But the experience of Real Madrid, who became the first team last year to win back-to-back Champions League titles proved too much.

And when the stage is set, there is only one man to grab the headlines.

Ronaldo has delivered in every Champions League match this season and he did it again with an unstoppable header at the back post.

Verratti then let his team-mates down with a lack of discipline but PSG were back in it with 10-men when Cavani levelled matters.

They poured forward, leaving gaps in defence and Real Madrid exploited them when Rabiot's terrible clearance fell right into the path of Casemiro.

Despite their league form, Real Madrid will be the team everyone wants to avoid in the draw for the last eight.

We have a specialist for Porto in our own team in Pep and he always speaks with so much respect for that club.

We will have plenty of information and thats what you need before a game.

Champions League draw: Tottenham face Manchester City and Man Utd assigned Barcelona

"But you still have to play it and now we prepare. We know how good we had to be to beat them last year.

The German was very impressed with his Liverpool sides 3-1 midweek win over Bayern Munich.

He added: Last year was sensational free-flowing football. But this was the most mature performance we have put in so far in Europe.

If the Reds win they will set up a mouth-watering semi-final clash with either Barcelona or bitter rivals Manchester United.

But before the five goal first-half madness fans were venting their anger on Twitter as Citys sky blue kit seemed to clash with the light green of Spurs.

One said: "My eyes cant take this kit clash."

Another said: "How can this kit clash get allowed?"

One added: "Anyone else restarting for a kit clash."

Another added: "Wouldnt be accepting this on Fifa by the way #kitclash."

Fans were soon forgetting about the kit dilemma, though, as Raheem Sterling opened the lead two minutes in with a beautiful curled effort.

A Son Heung-min double then gave Spurs a 3-1 advantage and looked to be onto the upset triumph.

However, one attack later and Bernardo Silvas strike deflected off Danny Rose to level the game up at 2-2 on the night.

Sterling then grabbed a double as City regained the lead on the night and went within one goal of stealing the tie.
