Man City awarded penalty after shocking referee decision when Raheem Sterling trips himself and social media goes mad

THE worst decisions can lead to the best debates.

And the penalty given to Manchester City when Raheem Sterling tripped himself up has sent Twitter into over-drive - with fierce arguments and comical memes aplenty.

Referee Viktor Kassai was slated for "one of the worst decisions ever in football" while City striker Sterling divided opinion for not alerting the officials to their error during City's 6-0 Champions League demolition of Shakhtar Donetsk.

The England superstar, 23, said: "I went to chip the ball and don't know what happened.

"'I didn't feel contact. I scuffed the ball. Apologies to the ref."

And responding to claims Sterling should have told the ref, boss Pep Guardiola said: "He could do that, yeah.

"But last season Liverpool and James Milner could say the same for the pass for the second goal in the 44th minute of the quarter-final. That was a legal goal."

Guardiola mainly put the blame on the lack of video technology, adding: "VAR is what it is. I said a long time ago the refs must be helped."

Football is certainly littered with examples of teams and players keeping quiet when knowingly gaining advantage from a ref's blunder, big or small, important or not.

So surely is it harsh to suddenly single out Sterling for criticism.

Or should City and their in-form atacker forget about the others and just focus on their own standards of fair play?

And after setting a new mark in British football for stylish play, should City try to match that with their etiquette?

Adam keyworth @adamkeyworth tweeted what he believes were clear blunders in other games, and asked if the players involved should have owned up.

He then said: "Or is it only cheating when it's Sterling/City?"

And he added: "This list could go on forever and could apply to most clubs.

"Can't help but wonder why this is the one that causs so much fauz outrage from the usual suspects... have a day off."

One fan responded: "Neither legend Maradona nor (Thierry) Henry did it.. That's a bitter agenda against @Mancity and Sterling. .. What a shame!"

Rio Ferdinand says Manchester City players should have stopped and told referee Raheem Sterling had tripped himself

But another argued: "It was such a bad decision with @Sterling that he should have said it wasn't a penalty.

"Or Man C should have done the decent thing and deliberately missed the penalty. In the same way that you would kick a ball out to stop play if a player was injured."

Shakhtar chief Paulo Fonseca said of the penalty verdict: "It's ridiculous. Everyone saw it. I told the referee it was ridiculous. But we didn't lose the game because of that."

And the debate seems certain to rage far longer than his hapless side survive in this season's Champions League.

But the Brazilian looked some way short of the player he was when he burst on to the scene early last year.

Jesus, 20, has suffered two big injuries during his 15 months at The Etihad and admitted the recent ligament problem plays on his mind.

Speaking after his fourth appearance back in the Champions League clash, said: You end up thinking about the game where you got injured.

Against Basel, I still played with some fear. There are some movements when I still have fear about getting injured.

The return of Jesus is a big boost for boss Pep Guardiola as he looks to seal the Premier League title and conquer Europe.

But they need him to find some form as his goal on Wednesday was his first since mid-November though he was out for seven weeks.

Jesus added: It was only at the end of Wednesdays game that I felt tired but it was normal because I ran a lot.

Man Utd and Arsenal boost with Champions League spot going to fifth in Premier League if Man City are banned for breaking FFP rules

Manchester United and Arsenal could find fifth place in the Premier League next season qualifies them for the Champions League

FIFTH place in the Premier League is likely to seal a place in the Champions League next season if Man City are hit with a European ban.

City are fighting a Uefa charge for breaching Financial Fair Play regulations with the governing body recommending they are hit a with a suspension.

But the governing body have confirmed that four places in Europe's top competition will still be on offer to English clubs no matter what happens with City.

So if Pep Guardiola's side are barred from taking part in the 2020-21 season, the Premier League will still have a quartet in the competition.

And that means the battle for fifth place in the domestic game next season will likely see qualification for the Champions League.

How the European spots are allocated is a matter for individual associations, but it is almost certain they would shift the qualifying space down to fifth rather than make it the reward for either the FA Cup or Carabao Cup winners.

And with City fully expected to be in the top four of the Premier League next season having won the title for the past two years, it offers hope for other sides.

Arsenal finished fifth this season, with Manchester United in sixth - and both know they face a big challenge keeping up with the sides who finished in the Champions League spots this season.

Chelsea are facing a summer of uncertainty as they try to overturn a transfer ban which threatens to leave their squad weakened by the end of the summer with Eden Hazard expected to join Real Madrid.

If fifth secured a qualifying spot that would offer them some comfort - although Everton, Leicester and Wolves all have ambitions of challenging the monopoly of the top clubs in England.

City themselves are fiercely contesting the Uefa charge insisting they have no case to answer - and the disciplinary process is expected to take months to resolve - which is why their spot next season as not under threat.

The game started in a blistering pace, with Julian Draxler being denied from close range by Sven Ulreich in the third minute, and they were immediately made to rue their missed opportunity.

Star striker Robert Lewandowski banged in his 20th goal of the season in the eighth, as he found the bottom right corner after getting on the end of a David Alaba header.

Neymar should equalised for the Ligue 1 outfit in the 33rd minute, but he was thwarted by a wonder save from Ulreich who somehow got his fingertips on the ball before it nestled in the back of the net.

Kylian Mbappe sent the Brazilian international through on goal with a glorious outside of right foot pass, but the ex-Barcelona winger failed to capitalise on the chance.

And the French club were yet again made to pay, as midfielder Tolisso doubled the Bundesliga champions' lead.

The 23-year-old powered his header across goal in the bottom left corner in the 37th minute after a sensational cross from James Rodriguez.

Just five minutes into the second half, Mbappe banged in his fourth Champions League goal of the season after dispatching a header from an Edinson Cavani delivery.

And they should have been back on level terms when Draxler squandered a key chance, before Ulreich again was called into action to palm away Mbappe's drive.

Any hopes of a comeback were then dashed when Tolisso netted his second of the match in the 69th minute as he stroked his strike beyond the diving arms ofAlphonse Areola.

Kingsley Coman done brilliant down the left flank to get past marker, before squaring the ball for the former Lyon star.

There was to be no late drama in Bavaria, despite Mbappe and Lewandowski both somehow failing to double their tally for the match.

Incredibly, Bayern have now scored in each of their last 68 competitive home games, but they couldn't score enough to drop PSG into second place.
