Manchester United beaten by old boy Cristiano Ronaldo as he returns to Old Trafford with Juventus

Paulo Dybala celebrates scoring Juventus' first against Manchester United at Old Trafford

JOSE MOURINHO walked to Old Trafford to beat the traffic - his players could be accused of failing to show up.

But there was no disguising how poor his team were against a Juventus team who could easily have added to Paulo Dybalas winner.

United did get better and hit the post through Paul Pogba in the second half but it was not the display to get Mourinhos men fully back on track.

Mourinho hailed his teams display at Chelsea at the weekend when they were unlucky not to win.

But it was a case of one step forward and two back after getting outclassed by the Italians. This was more like the performance against Newcastle, minus the late comeback.

They are still in good shape in the group thanks to Valencia failing to beat Young Boys but this was demoralising for United fans as they were that far off the pace for most of this defeat.

It summed up the mess at the club that Mourinho had to walk the final half a mile to the ground, with traffic a nightmare to get to the Theatre of Dreams.

It was all smiles in the tunnel when Pogba hugged his old Juve pals and France team-mate Blaise Matuidi.

But Pogba was a huge part of the problem. He never took control of the midfield, never won the personal duels with Matuidi - and it never gave United a chance to take control of the game.

Nemanja Matic was overrun without any help from Pogba and it helped Juve show their class.

The warning signs were there early on when Matic and Victor Lindelof were bawling at each other as Uniteds defence came under threat again.

They knew there was danger brewing and it did not take long before they were exposed for the opener.

It was too easy for Cristiano Ronaldo, back at Old Trafford, to get down the right and see his cross flick off Anthony Martial.

Chris Smalling could have done better to clear the danger as Juan Cuadrado challenged, while Lindelof was nowhere to be seen.

Matic was guilty of failing to track Dybala beyond the first few steps of his run - and was punished when the Argie hitman stroked the ball home.

David De Gea made sure United stayed within sight of the Italians with some smart goalkeeping.

The Spaniard was at full-stretch to parry away Joao Concelos drive. He was put straight away to clear more danger but had every right to blast his defenders for giving the full-back so much room.

De Gea also blocked a Ronaldo free-kick that wobbled in the air as the Portuguese winker looked to inflict more misery on his old club.

Even when United looked to get back in the game they were struggling to feed Romelu Lukaku.

The Belgian striker, who has not scored at Old Trafford since March, cut a frustrated figure up front.

In the second half he had his shirt tugged by Giorgio Chiellini in the penalty area - but Milorad Mazic did not spot it, with United failing to get a break to get back into the game.

It meant Juve could counter-attack and De Gea was always in the game. He pulled out a stunning save to deny Ronaldo again, this time when his drive was angled towards the top corner.

Pogba hit the post with 15 minutes left with a curler after a sharp turn, with the rebound cannoning off Wojciech Szczesnys face and out for a corner.

Marcus Rashford had a late penalty shout turned down when he was nudged by Andrea Barzagli - but it was a hopeful appeal.

Lineker says Messi turned Phil Jones inside out so many times that his bandage loosened

Lionel Messi stunned the Nou Camp with a remarkable run against Phil Jones

GARY LINEKER led the plaudits for Lionel Messi's performance against Manchester United by saying he "turned Phil Jones inside out so many times here that his bandage loosened."

The England defender - who was channelling his inner Terry Butcher in the 3-0 defeat - was nutmegged with ease by the Argentian during a rampant first-half.

Jones was wearing a Terry Butcher-esque headband against Barcelona

Speaking at half-time, BT Sport presenter Lineker said: "He turned Phil Jones inside out so many times here that his bandage loosened."

The 27-year-old started the game wearing the headgear after he needed stitches when he clashed with Declan Rice during the Red Devils 2-1 win over the Hammers.

The ex-Blackburn star was deemed fit enough to start for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side but the protective headgear showed Jones had not fully recovered from the injury.

The look drew parallels to the days of Terry Butcher, who rocked a bloodied headband in England's game against Sweden in 1989 in one of football's most iconic images.

Jones and his headband started the night at right-back but an early tactical move from his Norwegian manager saw him placed inside in favour of Victor Lindelof.

The Old Trafford club were trailing by a solitary goal from the first leg but a quick-fire double from Lionel Messi has seemingly spelt the end of their European campaign.

Basel 1 Man Utd 0: Late goal for hosts keeps Red Devils waiting to seal Champions League group stage qualification

Man Utd suffered a late defeat to Basel this evening

MANCHESTER UNITED fell to a last gasp goal in Switzerland that means they are still not guaranteed qualification to the knockout stage of the Champions League.

It will take a big goals turnaround at Old Trafford next month for CSKA Moscow to deny them, but still United should not be needing the rule book and calculator.

They should have had this game done and dusted against a team they were far superior too.

United were certainly in control of the first half here in Switzerland without scoring. Twice they hit the woodwork while reserve goalkeeper Sergio Romero was a mere spectator at the other end.

Meanwhile quite what Gareth Southgate has been watching with regards to Chris Smalling is beyond him and everyone else witnessing his performance last night. He was calm itself controlling and playing the ball out from the back.

What more the England manager wants from a centre-back is a mystery because as Smalling said himself on the eve of this game he does have all the attributes.

At the other end of the pitch we thought Romelu Lukaku did too. His goal in the 4-1 mauling of Newcastle United on Saturday had ended his short barren spell in front of goal.

But last night he should really have added to his tally. It was a superb ball from Paul Pogba in the 12thminute that put him through.

Come the next phase and the knockout rounds, however, those chances are going to have to be taken.

You wonder whether Zlatan Ibrahimovic, watching on from the bench, would have taken it. My bet is he would.

More chances came Uniteds way. Marouane Fellaini had a header cleared off the line by Manuel Akanji and another flick header from the big Belgian skimmed the post.

Marcus Rojo also hit the woodwork late in the opening period with a long range shot that got a slight deflection and hit the bar.

United were on the front foot again straight from the restart with Anthony Martial firing over a cross that Lukaku headed over.

The seven changes Mourinho had made from his team that beat Newcastle at the weekend certainly did not look to have an affect on the performance.

Athough David De Gea did seem a bit bemused by his exclusion from the match day squad having made the journey to Switzerland.

There was a strange exchange between him and goalkeeping coach Silvino Louro before kick off when De Gea was sat watching the warm up from the sidelines with headphones in.

Louro made a 50 yard dash to him and told him to go down the tunnel. Real Madrid will not doubt be watching with interest.

With CSKAs victory over the hapless Benfica earlier in the day this was a must win for Basel and they showed the urgency of a side needing all three points after the break.

Renato Steffen had a shot that deflected off Dimitri Oberlin and it needed a good save from Romero to stop the ball going in.

Steffen was the danger man again moments later with a curling effort that went just wide of the far post.

Then when Lang outjumped Daley Blind his header hit the bar and Mohamed Elyounoussis follow up shot was well saved by Romero.

There was a scare in the 70thminute too when Marcus Rojo stuck his leg out as Steffen wriggled his way into the box.

Steffen went down but it appeared he initiated the contact rather than the other way round and referee Daniele Orasto from Italy waved the penalty appeals away.

Basel kept up the pressure and Rojo was at the centre of things again when Dimitri Oberlin burst into the box only for the United defender to slide in and block his attempt.

Concerned with how the game was now going Mourinho then unleashed the Lion on 73 minutes as Zlatan Ibrahimovic was brought into the action for Anthony Martial.

But Basel remained on top and with a minute remaining Raoul Pertretta crossed to the far post and Lang slide the ball in from close range.

St. Jakob Park erupted, Jose Mourinho looked on in disbelief.
